Source 2 is coming!

Valve have officially announced their Source 2 engine and that it will be "free to content developers". It will also support the KHRONOS group's Next generation Vulcan graphics API.

"With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity,"

"Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favourite games.

Source 2 is coming!

It is unknown at this time if Valve mean that the game is "free to use" like the Unreal Engine, which charges royalty fees, or if the engine is only free for modders as the term "content developers" is rather vague. We know that the engine is targeted for both developers and modders.

Valve has also announced that they will also make a version of the engine that is Vulcan compatible, which will help with Valve's move toward Linux and away from Windows. Support for this API natively will be very helpful for developers which want to develop for Linux as well as Windows.

Right now we do not know when the source 2 engine will be available to developers, or if the announcement of this engine means that we will be getting a few games with the number 3 in the title, as the original source engine was released with Half life 2.

Hopefully we will learn more about Source 2 as GDC continues.
