IO Interactive has been dropped by their publisher Square Enix, placing the Studio up for sale after Hitman 2016 failed to meet sales expectations.

This comes after a successful quarter from Square Enix, where the company as a whole earned a total of 33,310 Million Yen ($292 million USD) in profit. It does not look like Square Enix are in desperate need to tightening their belts, which implies that IO Interactive as a developer is not producing satisfying results for Square Enix.

In a new press release, Square Enix has confirmed that they are in talks with potential investors, which hints that IO Interactive is up for sale and not being closed outright, which means that the developer has a future, hopefully. At this time Square Enix says that “there can be no guarantees that negotiations will be concluded successfully”.

Moving forward, Square Enix plans on focusing their resources on “key franchises and studios”, which means that the company does not seem interested in developing new IP at this time.

At this time it is unknown if the Hitman IP will move with IO Interactive to their new publisher, or if Square Enix will move the series’ development to a new studio.
