Steam sets a new record with over 39 million concurrent players

Multiple successful game launches propel Steam’s userbase to new heights

Steam has set a new concurrent user record, surpassing 39 million active users last weekend. This comes after the launch of Path of Exile 2’s early access period and Marvel’s Rivals, both of which are now among Steam’s top 5 most played games.

Other successful game launches include Delta Force, STALKER 2, and Farming Simulator 25, all of which have high player counts. It took Valve around three months to surpass its prior record of 38 million. Now, we wonder how long it will be until Valve surpasses 40 million players.

Recent years have seen Valve’s player numbers soar. At the start of 2020, Valve was yet to pass 20 million concurrent users. Now, Valve has almost doubled that. Clearly, the PC gaming market is growing, and Valve is a huge beneficiary of that growth.

Today, Steam’s most-played games include Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, Battlegrounds, DOTA 2, Path of Exile 2, and Marvel Rivals. Note that two of those games are new releases, and one of them isn’t free to play.

Will it be long before Steam achieves its next concurrent player record/milestone?  Probably not. Christmas is coming, and a lot of people like to game during the holidays. Perhaps we will see Steam break past 40 million before the new year?
