Steam users aren’t playing new games as much as classics – Replay data shows
Steam Replay confirms that PC gamers prefer playing classic games over new titles
Valve has released Steam Replay 2025, allowing players to view their favourite 2025 games and see exactly how long they played them on Steam. Alongside this data are some interesting tidbits of player habits on the platform. On average, a Steam user played four different games this year and unlocked 11 achievements.
When it comes to playtime, just 14% of total playtime was spent on games released in 2025. Most playtime, 44%, was spent on “Recent Favourites”, which were released between 1 and 7 years ago. Gamers spent 40% of playtime on “Classic Games”, which are 8 or more years old.
Using Steam Replay, gamers can see all of their gaming statistics. This includes how much they gamed on a mouse/keyboard versus a controller, their favourite genres, and which demos and playtests they participated in. Gamers can also see their timeline, breaking down which games they played each month.
Steam Replay Stats
- 14% of playtime was on games released in 2025
- 44% of Playtime was spent on games from the last 1-7 years
- 40% of playtime was spent on games 8 or more years old
Note that last year, more gamers spent time on new releases (15%) and recent favourites (47%), with 37% of playtime being spent on “classic games” (37%).
If memory pricing continues to be abhorrent in 2026, which is almost certain, I’d expect “recent favourites” and “classic games” to become a growing category in Steam’s 2026 Replay data. After all, older games don’t require hardware upgrades to play at their best.
