Stellar Blade will use Frame Generation to reach 60 FPS on Switch 2
ShiftUp plans to use both DLSS upscaling and FSR 3.1 Frame Generation on Stellar Blade’s Switch 2 version
Stellar Blade is coming to Switch 2, and ShiftUp are using unusual techniques to get the game running at 60 FPS on Nintendo’s handheld. The game will use Nvidia’s DLSS for upscaling, leveraging the power of the Switch 2’s Nvidia-powered SOC, and will use AMD’s FSR 3.1 technology for frame generation. That’s right, the game isn’t running at a “real” 60 FPS.
Stellar Blade 2 on Switch 2 will run at a native 30 FPS and use FSR 3.1 to reach 60 FPS. With frame interpolation, Stellar Blade 2 will output 60 FPS in both handheld and docked mode. While this method has its downsides (like increased latency), ShiftUp prefers this approach to simply targeting 30 FPS on Nintendo’s new handheld.
So we targeted 60 frames per second in both handheld mode and docked mode. And actually, one unique method that we use is that, as you are very well aware, Switch 2 supports Nvidia’s DLSS. We use that to upscale, but it doesn’t support… it doesn’t have any features for frame generation.
What we did was we take AMD’s FSR 3.1 for PC and used the feature called frame interpolation to achieve the target for 60 frames per second. We use DLSS for upscaling, and then took the result we got and used frame interpolation from FSR 3.1 to be able to target 60 frames per second.
Also, it was important to have even latency for players. We have 30 frames per second to have it even and then use interpolation – a frame interpolation – for targeting 60.
Stellar Blade first launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, so it makes sense that cutbacks are necessary to run the game on Nintendo’s newest handheld. That said, using Frame Generation with a low input framerate is controversial. If nothing else, it will give the game’s Switch 2 version much higher input latency than the game’s PS5 version. Beyond that, it could cause noticeable graphical issues.
