The Resident Evil Classic Trilogy has arrived on Steam

GOG’s new versions of Capcom’s original Resident Evil games are now available on Steam

Capcom has officially released its Resident Evil Classic Collection on Steam, bringing the original PC versions of Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis to PC’s most popular platform.

These classic game re-releases were co-developed with GOG and have been available on GOG for some time in DRM-free form. On Steam, these games feature additional DRM in the form of Capcom’s “The Enigma Protector” DRM, which is an odd decision. All three games are currently available with a 50% discount on Steam. All three games are currently available for £3.99 on Steam.

These new versions of the first three Resident Evil games feature an improved graphics engine, improved DirectX rendering, and support for modern OS’. They also feature improved subtitles, an improved options menu, and control over antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. In short, this is the best way to play the original three Resident Evil games on PC.

A huge win for game preservation

Thanks to GOG, the original PC versions of Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 have been preserved. If you want to buy/play the original version over its modern remake, you now can. The original versions of these games do not run well on modern Windows PCs. For this reason, GOG worked with Capcom to restore/improve these games while maintaining their original gameplay and aesthetic. This isn’t a remaster, it’s a restoration.

In February, Capcom and GOG also brought Dino Crisis 1 and 2 to Steam. It is also great to see that GOG appears willing to let its improved “GOG Preservation Program” versions of games available on other platforms. Will this apply to even more GOG Preservation Program titles in the future? I guess we will have to wait and see.
