Andrzej Sapkowski, the creator of the Witcher series did not think that the games would be a success, selling the rights to the series for a lump sum rather than for a percentage of profits.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, the writer was upfront in stating that he does not hold any ill will against CD Projekt RED, stating that they did offer him a percentage of the game's profits and that he turned that offer down in favour of a lump sum payment.

It is not that I don’t like them, that I despise them. I just don’t play them! But I have nothing against games, I have nothing against gamers. Nothing.

I was stupid enough to sell them rights to the whole bunch. They offered me a percentage of their profits. I said, ‘No, there will be no profit at all – give me all my money right now! The whole amount.’ It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn’t believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn’t.

This decision meant that Sapkowski did not profit directly from the success of the Witcher game series, a decision that the writer now regrets. That being said the game series has sparked some extra interest in the book series, which has indirectly benefited the writer.

Sapkowski did state that CD Projekt RED have created a "very good, well done" game, saying that they deserve their success for creating this adaptation of his book series.

The game is made very well. and they merit all of the beneficiaries they get from it. They merit it. The game is very good, well done, well done.

In his interview with Eurogamer Andrzej Sapkowski has also stated that he will "absolutely" create another story within the Witcher series, which is certainly something that will excite fans of the series.

I read something about that elsewhere some time ago. Apparently he's a bit salty about not having a say with the future movie/TV direction. As I understood CD Project RED owns those rights, but Andrzej has the rights for any future booksQuote

Take note. This does not mean you can bring out watered down, lazy sequels and people will keep buying them.

With a video game any love you put in will come out onto the person playing it. If you are sloppy and lazy your game will feel sloppy and lazy.

IE - you can never rest and never let up. Unless of course you want Witcher 4 to be like Fallout 4.Quote
