The Original Mafia has arrived on GOG, years after being removed from Steam

Back in 2012, the original Mafia game, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, was removed from Steam, with the game’s publisher releasing no details regarding why the game was removed or whether or not the game will ever return to the storefront.
Now, this gaming classic has returned to sale on GOG, offering compatibility with modern Windows Operating systems, compatibility with GOG’s cloud save technology and without the original version’s licensed soundtrack.

This rerelease somewhat confirms rumours that the game was removed from Steam due to the game’s soundtrack, as it was removed from sale 10 years after the game’s release, exactly when one would expect such a licensing contract to expire.

While this new version of Mafia is not the same as the original, lacking the game’s original soundtrack and coming with an easier “patched” racing section, this is a great move for digital game preservation, as Mafia is now available in a DRM free form that can be purchased legitimately.

Below are Mafia’s PC system requirements, which are stupidly low by today’s standards. though this game was originally released in 2002.

Minimum system requirements

Windows: XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 10
Processor: 1.4 GHz or faster
Memory: 2GB RAM
Graphics: 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 9.0
Mouse, Keyboard.
