A new Engine for a Telltale game? That Unreal!

The Wolf Among Us 2 will be built from the ground up on a new engine

AdHoc Studio has confirmed that The Wolf Among Us 2 will be an entirely new creation from the studio, wiping away any work that was completed on the game before Telltale's shutdown.

While The Wolf Among Us 2 will be created by much of Telltale's creative leadership, the same can be said for the game on a software level. The ageing Telltale engine is dead, and The Wolf Among Us 2 will be based on Unreal Engine 4. This should allow the game to support modern rendering features, while also enabling new gameplay features to be added to the Telltale series.

One of the problems with the Telltale Games formula was a lack of innovation, the visuals for most releases were similar, and there was little in the way of gameplay variety within each title. Part of this came down to engine troubles, as the Telltale Tool engine proved challenging to upgrade, especially when combined with Telltale's workload.

These factors make The Wolf Among Us 2's use of Unreal Engine 4 a positive move for AdHoc Studio, as it will allow the series to release with modern visuals and gameplay features that are impossible within the Telltale Tool engine. This should result in The Wold Among Us 2 looking and playing better than prior Telltale titles.
