They hired a “specialist” – GOG Galaxy is coming to Linux
GOG’s Galaxy client is coming to Linux
Shortly after gaining its independence from CD Projekt Red, GOG started calling Linux the “next major frontier” for the gaming platform. Now, GOG has hired a “specialist” who will work on bringing the company’s Galaxy client to Linux, bringing DRM-free gaming to the platform.
GOG Galaxy is an app that allows gamers to download and install their GOG games and aggregate their games from other sources. This includes Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox (PC). While GOG does offer Linux downloads for some of its games, Linux support for the GOG Galaxy client has never been available. That will now change now that GOG has a Linux “specialist” on staff.
GOG’s co-CEO, Krzysztof Papliński, said to Gaming On Linux that Linux support is “one of the topics we hear the most about from our community”. GOG is ready to satisfy that demand for dedicated GOG Galaxy Linux support. That said, it will be a while before these plans come to fruition.
Linux continues to be one of the topics we hear the most about from our community, and we really appreciate the passion and patience of everyone who’s been asking about it.
Following the role we announced earlier this year, we now have the specialist on board and are actively exploring the best way to approach Linux support for GOG GALAXY. This is a significant undertaking, so while we’re not ready to share any specific plans, timelines, or results just yet, it’s very much an area we’re investing time and effort into.
We’re excited about the possibilities and will be happy to share more when the time is right!
– GOG joint-CEO Krzysztof Papliński to Gaming on Linux
It is currently unknown what GOG’s Linux strategy will be. Will they run their Windows games on Linux through a compatibility layer, or will GOG push to release dedicated Linux builds of individual games over time? Either way, GOG is cooking something for Linux gamers, and that’s great news.
