Twitter increases their character count to 280 for all users
According to Twitter’s own analytics around 9% of tweets in English hit the service’s character limit of 140, resulting in these users from having to rework/edit their Tweet to fit within the limit or abandon their Tweets entirely out of frustration.Â
This update is designed to eliminate the frustration associated with the platform’s old character limit, which should make some users more active on the platform. Twitter also found that those with the higher character limit also received more engagement on their posts, which again made users more satisfied with the platform, increasing their interaction with it.Â
One Languages like Japanese, Korean and Chinese will continue to have the service’s 140 character limit, as due to the nature of these languages a lower character count is required to convey most messages.Â
 Â
In the eyes of many, this update will be seen as more of a sidestep than an upgrade, as some see the low character count as part of Twitter’s charm, removing the novel length posts the occupy rival services like FaceBook to create a service with short, concise messages.Â
With this update, Twitter has seen a huge increase in posts that either request or demand that the service offers an edit button in the near future, as this function would be invaluable to those that wish to fix typos or other mistakes without deleting and reposting Tweets.Â
