Twitter increases their character count to 280 for all users

Twitter has officially increased their character limit to 280, allowing users to create longer messages without the need to redact content or make use of shorter words. This is a feature that has been tested on select Twitter users since September, with Twitter now bringing this update to all of their users. 

According to Twitter’s own analytics around 9% of tweets in English hit the service’s character limit of 140, resulting in these users from having to rework/edit their Tweet to fit within the limit or abandon their Tweets entirely out of frustration. 

This update is designed to eliminate the frustration associated with the platform’s old character limit, which should make some users more active on the platform. Twitter also found that those with the higher character limit also received more engagement on their posts, which again made users more satisfied with the platform, increasing their interaction with it. 

One Languages like Japanese, Korean and Chinese will continue to have the service’s 140 character limit, as due to the nature of these languages a lower character count is required to convey most messages.
