Valve a appeases Apple – removes purchases on Steam Link iOS app

Last month, Apple revoked Valve’s permission to release their Steam Link app onto iOS, citing “business conflicts” and a violation of their “app guidelines”.

Today, it seems like the reason behind Apple’s decision is clear. Apple does not want their iOS storefront to deliver their users a secondary store, a place where their users can purchase software and other items outside of the Apple ecosystem. Apple doesn’t want their users to spend money from within Valve’s Steam Link app.

This desire was discovered by TouchArcade after Valve released a new beta version of their iOS app to TestFlight app testers, which removed the ability to purchase games/apps within the Steam Link App, asking users to “purchase from your PC” when applicable. Strangely, some aspects of the Steam Marketplace remain functional, but only if the user has money left in their Steam Wallet, though this is only useful for purchasing items like PUBG crate keys.

Apple has not approved Valve’s new Steam Link app for iOS, though this development should give iOS users hope that Steam link is still coming to the platform. Valve is working to make their app comply with Apple’s standards, giving gamers a lesser version of the Link app to deliver iOS users game streaming capabilities.
