Valve releases Half-Life: Alyx’s Minimum PC System Requirements

Valve has confirmed that Half-Life: Alyx will release in March 2020 for all major PC VR systems, including Valve’s Index Headset, Oculus’ Rift Platform, HTC’s Vive ecosystem and Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality lineup.

Half-Life: Alyx is being developed on Valve’s Source 2 engine, allowing gamers to create new environments and levels for the game after launch using Valve’s updated Source 2 engine toolset. On Valve’s Steam store page for Half-Life: Alyx, Valve has already revealed Half-Life: Alyx’s minimum PC system requirements.

What’s worth noting here is that Valve isn’t targetting its own SteamVR minimum specifications. Valve’s targetting higher system specifications than that. Simply put, Valve wants to create a AAA VR game and to do that they need more raw computing horsepower, not VR’s minimum spec hardware.

For starters, Valve is asking for Windows 10 based systems, which presumably means that Half-Life: Alyx will lack Linux support. While Valve is a huge supporter of Linux gaming, it seems like Half_life: Alyx on Linux is a step too far for Valve, especially given VR’s already small playerbase.

CPU-wise, Valve wants Half-Life: Alyx players to have an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or an Intel i5-7500 processor or better. On top of this, Valve wants players to have at least 12GB of system memory, which, given the game’s CPU requirements, will be DDR4 memory.

When it comes to GPUs, Valve is targetting specifications that are a little higher than Valve’s current SteamVR recommended spec, which is a Geforce GTX 1060 and an AMD Radeon RX 480. For Half-Life: Alyx, Valve is asking for a minimum of a Radeon RX 580 and a Geforce GTX 1060, or equivalent graphics cards with 6GB of VRAM or more.

Below are Half-life: Alyx’s minimum PC requirements. Valve is expected to reveal more detailed minimum and recommended system requirements for the game at a later date.

These minimum system requirements are similar to the recommended system requirements of most modern AAA games. That said, VR games are required to run at higher framerates than most AAA titles, which should explain why such high minimum system requirements are necessary.

OS: Windows 10
Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600
Memory: 12 GB RAM
Graphics: GTX 1060 / RX 580 – 6GB VRAM
