VideoLAN adds AI subtitle generation to VLC Media Player
Not even VLC Media Player is immune to the appeals of AI
VideoLAN, the non-profit behind VLC Media Player, attended CES 2025 to showcase the latest addition to their popular video player, AI subtitle generation.
VLC Media Player has been downloaded over 6 billion times, making it one of the most popular pieces of software on the planet. Next year will mark VLC’s 30th anniversary. Since its launch, VLC media player has only gotten better.
At CES 2025, VideoLAN showcased their AI-enhanced version of VLC Media Player in action. Using locally run AI models, VideoLAN offers users AI subtitle generation and translation in real time. Thanks to the local nature of these models, this feature works without an internet connection.

It is unknown when VideoLAN will release this AI-enhanced version of their popular media player. Furthermore, it is unknown how much this feature will enlarge the size of VideoLAN’s software. After all, users must download the AI models behind this translation feature. Beyond that, it remains to be seen how accurate this feature will be during real-world use. Will translations be accurate? Can it accurately subtitle videos with a lot of technical detail?
