Global IT outage causes chaos across the planet

The ongoing Crowdstrike computer outage is affecting millions across the world. The payroll of many workers is delayed, flights are cancelled, and companies are reporting problems with their services on mass.

What was originally reported as a “Microsoft Outage” has proven to be a bad update from Crowdstrike, a major cybersecurity firm. Their software has been causing crashes on Microsoft-powered systems, impacting IT systems across the globe. As a result of these issues, Crowdstrike’s shares have opened with a 15% drop in value. All of a sudden, $12.5 billion in value has disappeared from Cyberstrike.

Below is a list of some of the industries hit by today’s global IT outage. Further updates will be made to this list as the day progresses.

Crowdstrike outage hits the newsroom

Early this morning, Sky News’ broadcast stopped broadcasting thanks to Crowdstrike’s software. One of the UK’s largest news providers was one of the earliest victims of this emerging IT issue. While Sky News is now broadcasting again, several hours of planned programming couldn’t happen due to problems with their computer systems.

Airlines and Airports

Many flights across the world are delayed or grounded thanks to today’s global IT chaos. Passengers are experiencing delays as many computerised services are not functioning correctly. As a result, . These issues are globally in scope, impacting airlines and passengers across the world.

Ryanair has advised their passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flights. This will allow for more time for passengers to pass through security and be ready for their planned flights.

Call Centers hit hard by Crowdstrike outage

We have heard reports that call centers run by Ascensos, a major call center service provider, have gone offline. This is affecting hundreds of the company’s customers. this may include customers like Selfridges, JD Sport, WeWork, Iceland, Morrisons, Pizza Hut, Aldi, Ann Summers, and more. Until their services are back online, good luck getting calls though to these companies.

Trains

IT issues have hit the UK’s major rail service providers. This has resulted in delays and short-term cancellations. Additionally, real-time customer information platforms aren’t functioning correctly. Furthermore, some providers recommend alternative services to commuters.

Banks

Banking issues have been reported at NatWest, HSBC, Santander, and Lloyds Bank. That’s just a list of affected UK banks. If we included a global list of affected banks, we would be here all day. These issues reportedly impact pending payments. This impacts worker payroll. That’s a serious problem for companies who pay their workers weekly.

Medical services

Across the UK, GP surgeries and  pharmacies have reported issues with their IT systems. This includes their systems for appointments, prescriptions, and patient files. Sadly, these issues are beyond the control of GPs and pharmacists, causing delays within the system and the cancellation of many appointments.
