Windows 11 bug causes mouse gaming stutter – Microsoft admits

Microsoft confirms that a Windows mouse bug was causing stuttering in games

With a new Windows Update, Microsoft has admitted that an OS bug has been causing stuttering in games. Specifically, the bug caused “mouse input to stutter” on some Windows-powered gaming PCs. While Microsoft’s statement isn’t specific, it implies that mouse input may lag and suddenly catch up, causing games to stutter. Mouse inputs may pause and then suddenly jump.

Windows Latest discovered Microsoft’s admission in their October 2026 Patch Tuesday update. The good news is that a fix is now available. Sadly, Microsoft’s release notes don’t list affected games, hardware configurations, or other details. It is also unclear how long this bug has been present within Windows.

This update fixes an issue that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games,

Windows Latest has noted that one Windows user posted on a Microsoft Q&A to report that a Windows Update caused mouse-related issues in Star Wars: The Old Republic and Final Fantasy XIV. They also uncovered reports of mouse trouble dating back to February 2025, suggesting this bug may be a longstanding issue.

Suffering from this issue? Update Windows

To address this issue, all you need to do is update your Windows installation. Specifically, you will need Windows 11’s October 13th 2026 security update (KB5127648). To install this update, open Settings, go to Windows Update, and click “Search for updates”. If your system hasn’t updated yet, you can download and install Windows 11’s October 13th security update.

While Microsoft hasn’t confirmed a list of affected games, Windows Latest has uncovered several instances of Windows users blaming their hardware for mouse stuttering. While hardware issues are possible, many of these gamers were likely victims of this mouse-related Windows bug. At least Microsoft has now fixed this issue. That said, it is a shame that Microsoft’s update notes aren’t more specific.
