Windows 11 finally overtakes Windows 10 as the world’s top OS

Windows 11 is now the most used Windows OS, with market share climbing to 52%

It’s official, Windows 11 is now the world’s most-used OS. As of July 2025, Windows 11 has surpassed Windows 10, achieving a market share of 52%. It has taken Windows 11 almost four years to surpass its predecessor, with various factors contributing to a sudden decline in Windows 10’s usage.

Microsoft is dropping its security support for Windows 10 in October. While there are ways to extend this support past this date, Windows 10’s days as a mainstream OS are numbered. If users want a secure system, they will need to upgrade to a new OS. This is forcing a new wave of hardware upgrades, which is lowering Windows 10’s usage while increasing Windows 11’s market share. This trend is expected to continue as we approach October.

The recent rise in Windows 11’s market share isn’t due to the OS’ feature set or advantages over Windows 10. Simply put, Microsoft’s decision to drop support for Windows 10 has forced users to upgrade to the company’s newer OS, often requiring a change to new PCs.

Today, more than 700 million devices use Windows 11. This number will continue to grow as consumers and businesses continue to move to Microsoft’s new OS.
