In a media event Microsoft unveiled that their latest build of Windows 10 will make updating from older operating systems much easier than it has ever been before.

Windows 7 and 8 users will be able to update to Windows 10 directly through Windows Update, negating the need for us to burn a DVD or making a USB boot drive to then fiddle about with the Bios. It is great to see Microsoft make the upgrade process so easy now, especially given how it will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users for the first year.

At launch this upgrade should be delivered straight through Microsoft Update, but for now to update to Build 9926 you will need to  go to the Windows 10 Technical Preview Page and select Upgrade now. This will download a file to your PC which after you will run it you will reboot and then be able to "upgrade to Windows 10 to technical preview" as an option on Window update.

This change in how you upgrade your OS will undoubtedly significantly increase the amount of people who will upgrade to Windows 10 upon it's release later this year, as people like things free and easy. If the upgrade is free and is handled solely by Windows Update why resist upgrading?

Has anyone tried it?

Does it actually work successfully?

If it works flawlessly then this will be the best thing since sliced bread.Quote

Last weekend I did a fresh install on my Windows 8.1 system. I only have a Windows 8.0 install on my flash drive, so I have to update to 8.1. This time, instead of going to the store to update, the 8.1 was installed through Windows Update. It worked flawlessly. I would assume that Win 10 will work exactly the same way. No more need to download it through the store, ya!Quote
