Windows 10's growth with PC gamers has been halted

Windows 10's growth with PC gamers has been halted, with this month's Steam Hardware survey showing an increase in both Windows 7 and 8.1 use.

It seems like a lot of PC gamers have decided to revert their PCs back to Windows 7 and 8.1 after taking advantage of Microsoft's free upgrade to Windows 10, either deciding that they dislike Windows 10 or find no advantage to using the new OS at this time.

Now Microsoft's Windows 10 OS makes up around 47.28% of Steam's userbase, which is a slight decrease over last month. This is almost half of all PC gamers on the Steam platform, which goes to show how dominant Windows 10 is in the gaming market.

In other parts of the Steam Hardware survey, we can see that the percentage of PC gamers using VR remains largely unchanged, with 0.19% reported to be using an HTC Vive and only 0.09% using an Oculus Rift. This is not considered to be representative of the entire VR userbase, as Steam's hardware survey does not account for users who do not have their VR headsets plugged into their systems.

When it comes to the GPU market Nvidia remains dominant with 58.8% of the GPU market, with AMD taking up 24.06% and Intel taking up 17.7% of the market.

A lot of it is down to the free upgrade period being over, though I would think that a lot of users have reverted to Windows 7 or 8.1 after that update.

At over 47% Windows 10's growth shouldn't be expected to grow at the same rate and right now Windows 10 is not offering that much of an advantage when gaming.

Not many games use DX12 and there is not much trust in Microsoft's Windows 10 store only games yet.Quote

Would be nice if I could apply a windows 7 ghem with aero glass without having to mess around. Was quite fond of the look.

When I had my w7 backup pc with my main one side by side ag 4k on an Oled, the w7 one looked amazing whereas the w10 one was kinda depressing to look at when I was feeling down..Quote

Now if only they could fix what they broke in the last update that would be great! Portable devices no longer detected and MTP Driver Errors everywhere, Audio sources mysteriously changing with every boot up.. it's getting beyond a joke now. Ubuntu is free and has far less bugs than this garbage. I'm going back to 8.1.Quote
