Xbox backwards compatibility for Windows is in the works
Xbox plans to bring Xbox and Xbox 360 games to Windows through backwards compatibility
Another reliable leaker has claimed that Microsoft plans to bring legacy Xbox game support to ASUS’ ROG Ally and other Windows devices through backwards compatibility. An effort is reportedly being made to bring classic Xbox and Xbox 360 games to Windows, though the exact scope of the project is unknown.
This backs up prior leaks that Microsoft is working on Xbox backwards compatibility on Windows. This support would be great for Xbox, as the future of Xbox appears to be more of an Xbox/PC hybrid than a traditional console. With Windows lacking dedicated versions of many legacy Xbox titles, backwards compatibility is seen as a way of delivering the “full Xbox experience” on PC.
If this effort is successful, Windows PCs could play classic Xbox titles in a similar way to Xbox Series X consoles. Some games could support higher framerates, HDR, and resolutions on PC, thanks to features like FPS Boost and Auto HDR.
There exists a hope to make legacy Xbox (OG and Xbox 360) games BC on ROG and Windows. Whether they succeed is the unknown; but there is an effort being made. The other unknown would be how extensive will the initiative be in offerings. Will it be what we currently have on Series or will BC expand to add more titles across the Xbox ecosystem.
If successful, Microsoft will bolster its Xbox Game Pass library for Windows and allow PC gamers to purchase and play several Xbox classics. Furthermore, it would increase the appeal of handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally to Xbox users.
Microsoft’s gaming focus is on Windows
This report comes at a time when Microsoft Gaming’s focus on Windows is increasing. Microsoft has plans to optimise Windows 11 for gaming. Features like the Xbox Full Screen Experience are coming to all Windows 11 PCs. Other features like “Advanced Shader Delivery” also aim to tackle some of the biggest problems facing PC gamers.
Backwards compatibility is a strong point for the Xbox Ecosystem. Microsoft intends to integrate Windows PC into the Xbox Ecosystem. If that is the case, gamers will expect an effort to make Xbox-PC backwards compatibility an option. If Microsoft succeeds here, Windows gaming will become a much better place for Xbox fans.
