Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo are reportedly skipping E3 2023

E3 2023 is reportedly going ahead without Sony, Nintendo, or Xbox

According to IGN, E3 2023 will be going ahead without the backing of the big three, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, leaving the expo without any support from console manufacturers.

E3 is the world’s largest video game event, but recent years have seen its support for the industry dwindle, with Sony abandoning the event in favour or standalone announcement events, and 2020 seeing the event be cancelled in its entirety thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

IGN has heard from multiple knowledgeable sources that Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo won’t be part of E3 2023 or have a presence on the Los Angeles Convention Center showfloor.

With E3 2023, the ESA, the organisers of the event, plan to bring the “community, media, industry back together in an all-new format”. At this time, it is unknown how successful this new format will be, or how many companies will be present at the event without the backing of publishers like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

It has been confirmed that Microsoft will ne hosting a satellite event around the E3 2023 timeframe, where Bethesda and Xbox will showcase their latest games at a time that is “convenient for press and even consumers” at E3. Microsoft has also publically stressed their support for the ESA, despite not being known to have a booth at E3 2023.

Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo are reportedly skipping E3 2023

The past few years have seen major publishers move away from fixed events like E3 and towards standalone game reveal events. Nintendo has Nintendo Direct, Sony has their PlayStation “State of Play” showcases, and Microsoft has recently hosted their first Xbox/Bethesda Developer_Direct event. All three console manufacturers now have a better way to showcase their games to their audiences, where they won’t be competing with their rivals for exposure.
