Counterfeit Samsung 990 PRO SSDs appear in Europe

Fake Samsung 990 PRO SSDs have appeared in Europe, with a Computerbase reader called “etoo” blowing the whistle on these counterfeit products. While their packaging closely mimics Samsung’s, the hardware inside doesn’t. Upon opening the box, “etoo” found an SSD with a blue PCB and incorrect circuitry. Note that Samsung’s real 9XX PRO series SSDs all use black PCBs.

The buyer received two of these fake SSDs after purchasing multiple SSDs from an Austrian retailer. The retailer has promised to investigate its distributors, and has reportedly stated that “no further suspicious SSDs” were found in their warehouse.

When testing this fake SSD with CrystalDiskMark and Samsung Magician, it can be further confirmed that this SSD are fake. In fact, Samsung’s software clearly states that it is “Non-Samsung”. Furthermore, the drive is completely non-functional, as they couldn’t be formatted.

High SSD prices have given fraudsters motivation to create more and more fake products. Over the past six-ish months, SSD pricing has doubled, creating a strong financial incentive for creators of fake hardware. Samsung has issued the following statement to Computerbase following their report on these fake SSDs.

Samsung takes such reports about counterfeit memory products very seriously. We are taking consistent action against the distribution of such counterfeits.

We recommend purchasing Samsung storage media exclusively through the Samsung Online Shop * or authorized retailers. Consumers can also use the Samsung Magician software * to verify that their product is genuine.

We are grateful for information from the market and consumers to quickly identify and investigate any cases. Users and partners can contact Samsung Product Service * if they suspect a problem.
