Gigabyte confirms that it’s AORUS Gen4 7000s SSD is “PS5 Ready”
Sony’s enabling the PS5’s M.2 SSD slot for beta firmware users, allowing users of the console to expand the system’s storage using off-the-shelf PCIe 4.0 SSDs.
Gigabyte, a large manufacturer within the PC components market, has confirmed through in-house testing that their AORUS Gen4 7000s SSD is “PS5 Ready”, showcasing that their SSD meets all of Sony’s standards for PlayStation 5 compatibility.Â
Sony recommends PCIe 4.0 SSDs that can offer users sequential read speeds of over 5,500 MBps, and the 7000s offers sequential read speeds of up to 7,000 MBps. Furthermore, Sony’s recommends SSDs with heatsinks, ensuring that compatible SSDs are adequately cooled when installed within the console. While many PC-focused M.2 SSDs ship with heatsinks, not many of them ship with heatsinks that can fit within Sony’s PlayStation 5 system. Thankfully for Gigabyte, their AORUS 7000s drives have a small enough heatsink to fit within Sony’s console.Â
Gigabyte’s AORUS 7000s SSDs are available with 1TB and 2TB capacities, either of which can significantly expand the usable storage within the system. Since the PlayStation 5 only ships with 825GB of internal storage (only 667.2GB of which is usable), the addition of a 1TB or 2TB M.2 SSD support should be seen as a huge upgrade for the system.Â
