Patriot reveals 12GB/s PCIe 5.0 SSD prototype at CES 2023

Patriot's got an ultra-fast PCIe 5.0 SSD on the horizon. Here's a look at their prototype

The PCIe 5.0 era of  SSD storage will soon be upon us, and Patriot's getting ready to push the interface as hard as possible, showcasing a prototype drive that promises to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 12,000 MB/s and write speeds as high as 10,000 MB/s.

While Patriot has not revealed the SSD controller or NAND used to create the engineering sample below, it is probable that Patriot's planned PCIe 5.0 SSD will be based on Phison's new PS5026-E26 SSD controller based on the specifications provided.

Patriot plans to release their next-generation PCIe 5.0 SSDs with capacity options between 1TB, and 4TB, which means that 1TB, 2TB and 4TB models should be on the way. Below we can also see that Patriot's PCIe 5.0 engineering sample features a beefy heatsink, which means that their planned PCIe 5.0 SSD models will likely ship with an equally large heatsink, which may or may not be actively cooled.

The era of PCIe 5.0 storage will soon be upon us, allowing PC builders to finally make use of the PCIe 5.0 lanes that are offered on modern AMD and Intel motherboards. Expect these new SSDs to be more expensive than today's high-end PCIe 4.0 storage drives, as they will require both high-end NAND and the newest SSD controllers in order to achieve 10+ GB/s speeds.

The big question is when will these new gen 5 NVMe SSDs become available to buy.Quote

I hope with gen 4 and gen 5 drives becoming more ubiquitous this also means devs start using DirectStorage soon so we can actually take advantage of the drives full performance.Quote

They could start now and still take advantage of what's available tbhQuote
