Samsung mass produces 28.4 GB/s PM1763 PCIe 6.0 SSD
Samsung enters the PCIe 6.0 era with its new PM1763 SSD
Samsung has begun mass production of its first PCIe 6.0 SSD, the PM1763. This SSD targets AI datacenters, delivering up to 28,400 MB/s sequential read speeds and up to 21,900 MB/s sequential write speeds. With this SSD, Samsung offers users a 2x speed boost over their existing PM1753 SSD. Note that the PM1763 is over 2x faster than its predecessor in many instances.
With PCIe 6.0 speeds, this drive can transfer a 40GB large language model (LLM) in 1.4 seconds. This can accelerate workloads by minimising data latency. Samsung also promises a 1.8x increase in power efficiency over their PM1753 SSD, reducing datacenter running costs.
This new SSD pairs Samsung’s 9th-generation 3D V-NAND with a new 4nm controller. This is where Samsung’s boosted SSD performance and efficiency come from. A faster controller with faster NAND can deliver huge performance gains. However, it should be remembered that the PM1763 SSD is a datacenter SSD, and will not offer its peak speeds on consumer-grade PCIe 5.0 PCs. Even next-generation consumer desktop PCs will lack PCIe 6.0 support.
Samsung’s new PM1763 SSD is now available in 4TB, 8TB, and 16TB forms. This SSD is optimised for liquid-cooled server environments using direct-to-chip (D2C) cooling solutions. Samsung has confirmed that this SSD will be available in E1.S, E3.S, and U.2 form factors. However, it should be noted that this SSD’s U.2 version will be limited to PCIe 5.0 speeds.
Samsung’s product page for its PM1763 SSD mentions capacities ranging from 4TB to 62TB. This implies that Samsung plans to release 32TB and 64TB versions of this SSD in the future.
