Western Digital's 2TB SN740 M.2 2230 SSD is the fantastic drive for high capacity Surface and Steam Deck upgrades
Many portable devices utilise the compact M.2 2230 form factor, offering users of these products limited upgrade potential due to the relative rarity of these compact M.2 SSDs. Typically, SSDs this small are only available to manufacturers and system integrators, not to consumers, but given the popularity of Valve's new Steam Deck handheld and Microsoft's Surface lineup, Scan UK has worked to make these drives available to consumers, resulting in the mainstream availability of Western Digital's SN740 series within the UK.
Scan UK are now selling 1TB and 2TB models of Western Digital's compact M.2 2230 SSD, making high capacity Steam Deck and Surface upgrades a simpler process than ever before. If you buy Valve's £349 (64GB) Steam Deck and either of these drives to have a higher capacity Steam Deck at a lower price than Valve's £569 512GB model. That's incredible value, especially after considering the fact that the SN740 is also faster than the SSDs that Valve use.
For users of Valve's Steam Deck and newer Microsoft Surface devices, these new SSDs from Scan are bargains. Better still, availability though Scan allows buyers to avoid the eBay sellers that often sell these drives with no warranties and huge mark ups. If you need a high capacity M.2 2230 SSD, these are the SSDs to buy, at least right now.
- Western Digital SN740 1TB SSD - £109.99
- Western Digital SN740 2TB SSD - £199.98
For £200, Western Digital's 2TB SN740 SSD is a genuine bargain for Steam Deck upgraders who want a tonne of onboard storage, offering a huge amount of storage for relatively little money. I expect this drive to sell out quickly at Scan, but thankfully Scan has confirmed to us that they have more of these drives on the way.
