Viking releases a colossal 50TB 3.5-inch SSD

Viking Technology has released a huge 50TB 3.5-inch SSD

When it comes to SSDs capacity is king. Yes, faster SSDs will deliver faster system performance but it is all four nought if it is not large enough to hold all of your most important programs and files.

Capacity is even more important in the server markets, where systems are expected to store a lot more data than any consumer system, requiring manufacturers to create larger SSDs than consumers could even dream of. Enter the Viking Technology UHC (Ultra High Capacity) Silo.

This new SSD from Viking delivers up to 50TB of memory capacity, utilising SK Hynix’s MLC memory and a “next-generation” flash controller to offer sequential read/write speeds of 500MB/s and 350MB/s respectively over a 6Gb/s SAS interface. This huge SSD will be crammed into a 3.5-inch drive form factor, giving it a similar size to a standard hard drive, while offering much higher speeds and a larger storage capacity.

In terms of random read/write performance, this drive offers 60,000/10,000 IOPS respectively, which is not that high when compared to some of today’s consumer SSDs. Even so, this drive offers an attractive level of storage for its size and will save clients space and power when compared to a similar HDD-based storage solution.

Viking releases a colossal 50TB 3.5-inch SSD

Viking has not released the price of this new SSD model, though it is expected to cost at least £15000, given the price of standard 1TB SSDs in the consumer market.
