Western Digital rolls out HDD price increases following increased demand

Following price increases from SanDisk and Micron, Western Digital has announced that it plans to raise the prices of its HDD products, citing “unprecedented demand”. Alongside this announcement, Western Digital also confirmed that it would be moving from air transport to ocean freight, citing “reduced emissions”. However, this change is likely due to cost concerns. Ocean freight is much less expensive than air freight.

The rise of AI has led tech giants to invest heavily in storage solutions, creating a huge demand for both SSD and HDD storage. Western Digital claims that its price increases will allow it to “advance innovation” and to “support this growth”. In other words, they need to increase HDD production, and their customers will pay for it.

Note that Western Digital’s price increases were announced alongside a change that will create a short-term shortage of HDDs. Switching from air freight to sea freight will increase product transit times by “six to ten weeks”. Western Digital are raising prices and making changes that will reduce HDD supply.

All this is bad news for anyone who isn’t Western Digital. For Western Digital, they have rising unit pricing and lowered transit costs. For customers, they face rising unit costs, longer lead times, and potentially a short-term HDD shortage.
