Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One X game install sizes will be larger

One of the biggest benefits of Microsoft’s Xbox One X console is the addition of 4GB of extra RAM, allow which is accessible to games. This extra RAM will allow games to load more complex textures and larger game assets, with the ability to also act as a RAMDISK when RAM goes under-utilised with games that lack Xbox One X support.

With this extra RAM and 4K support creates the need for higher resolution textures and large game files, creating a huge storage problem for Microsoft’s £449 Xbox One X. Many PC gamers will already know how much extra storage high-resolution texture packs can occupy, with Gears of War 4 taking up almost 100GB of storage on Windows 10.

These extra assets will be installed or downloaded regardless of the user’s screen resolution, as Xbox One X promises to downsample higher 4K games to fit onto lower resolution screens. This means that the console’s 1TB hard drive could be filled very quickly after a few large instals.

Xbox One and Xbox One S users will not require larger 4K assets given the fact that they lack the hardware to utilise them, which means that install sizes will be much smaller on those consoles.

From the looks of it, heavy Xbox One X gamers will need to purchase larger hard drives or invest in an external storage solution for use with the new console or be forced to uninstall and reinstall games on a regular basis.

PC users can very easily expand their storage options, but consoles are sadly much more limited in this regard. Let’s hope that developers don’t go overboard with game sizes moving forward.
