Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 3 is reportedly using an AMD CPU

Microsoft plans to reveal new Surface hardware on October 2nd, and rumour has it that some of the company’s new PCs will be powered by AMD processors.

Specifically, Microsoft’s 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is due to be powered by an AMD processor, moving the company away from its long-time partner Intel. This move will place AMD’s silicon inside a premium-grade notebook design from Microsoft themselves, acting as a huge recommendation of AMD hardware and a sign that Microsoft plans to continue optimising Windows 10 for AMD’s latest processors.

At this time the specifications of Microsoft’s upcoming system are unknown, but if WinFuture’s leaks are correct, Microsoft’s next Surface Laptop will contain an AMD processor with Radeon integrated graphics. The CPU is thought to be one of AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series APUs, such as the Ryzen 7 3750H or Ryzen 5 3550H.

If Microsoft opts to use AMD for its next Surface product, it will be seen as a huge sign of confidence in AMD’s products. It would also make it likely that future surface products will also use AMD’s Ryzen Mobile products, especially once they move to 7nm.
