Nintendo Switch surpasses PS2’s first 10-month sales numbers in Japan

When the Nintendo Switch hit the market, demand quickly outstripped supply, with console selling at well over their market value for months after the device’s release.

Now almost ten months have passed since the release of the Nintendo Switch, with recent sales data showing strong sales for the console, so much so that the Switch has now surpassed the sales of the PS2 during the same 10-month window. The Nintendo Switch released on March 4th (in Japan) while the Switch released on March 3rd, making their releases directly comparable.

In total, the Nintendo Switch is said to have sold 3,258,000 units since launch, with the PS2 selling 3,016,622 units in an equivalent timeframe, making the Nintendo Switch the fastest selling console in the country’s history within this 10-month timeframe. This sales gap is only expected to widen as the Switch closes in on its 1st anniversary.

Strong Japanise sales are important for the Switch’s future success, given the popularity of Japanese games in the western market as well as the importance of the “home market” to the nation’s developers.
