Nintendo has announced their new Nintendo Switch console

Nintendo has announced their new Nintendo Switch console, offering a hybrid console handheld experience that is unlike anything that we have seen before.

Right now Nintendo has not confirmed the specifications of the device, but it will be a Nvidia Tegra powered tablet which has detachable controller add-ons, which can be used when attached directly to the screen for handheld gameplay or with an add-on which allows you to use the controller wirelessly when in console or travel mode.

The tablet can dock at home into an interface which effectively turns the device into a home console, one that has the power to play games like Skyrim Special Edition both in home-console and in portable mode, with the transition between console and portable mode being as simple as removing the console from the docking station.

In the above video the console was shown running NBA 2017, Skyrim Special Edition, Mario Kart, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon, suggesting that a lot of existing Wii U titles will be ported over to the new console.

Below is a picture which showcases the device in console mode and the Nintendo Switch's controller, which can be simply switched over the tablet-like core with a few simple movements.

Right now Nintendo has not announced the pricing of this device, but it will release in March 2017.

Nvidias tegra chip isn't so great on the CPU side, but easily the best GPU for mobile, so hopefully it's able to overcome thatQuote

Interesting. Can't say I want to play Nintendo games enough to carry that about though.Quote

Remember that Nvidia has not released anything new in that regard in ages, since the K1 in the Shield tablet really.

Nvidia has worked hard to make their own new Tegra chips for cars, which are now using Pascal, FinFET Transistors and their new Denver CPU cores. If the NX uses the new Car Tegra stuff it will be surprisingly powerful.Quote

Is that even suitable for this though? Wouldn't there stuff be specifically designed for cars? They'd have to go back and change quite a bit of design I'd think. It's probably less expensive that way I'd suppose rather than a completely new architecture. So it could be possible for sureQuote

Nvidia has been talking about their "Denver" ARM CPU core designs since the Sheild Tablet was released. The cores are designed for tablets and ARM devices, not just cars.

Create a strong GPU design and a strong ARM CPU core design and it can be applied to a lot of different industries.Quote
