Microsoft has officially launched Windows 10 for an ARM, offering an x86 software emulator to function with most x86 software, allowing this new version of Windows to work just like a standard x86 version of Windows 10.

Windows 10 for ARM will likely succeed where Windows RT failed, offering support for standard x86 apps instead of relying on RT/ARM specific software. The Windows Kernel, drivers and all inbox programs will run on ARM code, with x86 programs running using an emulator.

Like all other forms of emulation, performance will be degraded when compared to native software, though at this time it is unknown how much of an impact emulation will have on the device’s usability.

Qualcomm has showcased two new notebook designs which will utilise their Snapdragon 835 SOC with Windows 10 for ARM. The first of these two devices is the ASUS NovaGo, a thin-and-light notebook with a 360-degree hinge to allow the device to be used as a laptop or a tablet. The Device offers a 13.3-inch screen and a 1080p display.

The NovaGo will come with 8GB of system memory, 256GB of storage and a microSD slot for additional storage. For connectivity, this device offers two USB 3.1 ports and am HDMI display output.

The second device that Qualcomm announced is the HP Envy x2, a 2-in-1 device which has a detachable keyboard for laptop/notebook functionality. The device offers a 12.3-inch screen with support for an active stylus and configurations with up to 8GB f RAM and 256GB of storage.

HP’s Envy x2 comes with a single USB Type-C port for charging and external connectivity. This device is clearly aiming at the same market as Microsoft’s Surface Pro.

One of the biggest draws for Windows 10 on ARM is the fact that mobile SOCs like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 features support for mobile network connectivity. This will allow internet connectivity to function in a similar way to mobile phones, allowing these devices to be used online without a Wi-Fi hotspot, which will be extremely handy while travelling.

Both the HP Envy x2 and ASUS NovaGo come with Windows 10 S, which will be upgradable to Windows 10 for a one-time fee. This upgrade will allow applications from outside of the Windows 10 Store to be installed.
