Some Dell XPS 9550 and Precision 5510 notebooks are suffering from battery swelling issues
Those who are affected by this battery swelling issue will notice that the chassis or touchpad will be bulging under the stress of the notebook's swollen battery, as can be seen in the image below.
Below is an excerpt from Dell's customer emails regarding this issue.
Dell has recently noticed that certain customers who purchased the Dell XPS 9550 and/or Precision 5510 system(s) may be experiencing batteries swelling or bulging.
If any of your system(s) are already exhibiting symptoms of a bulging battery such as the chassis or palmrest bulging please contact Dell technical support for the quickest support on those systems only. Please reference QNA44171
According to our records, your Dell System(s) may be impacted by this issue. As part of a proactive effort, Dell would like to offer to replace the battery for each affected Service tag(s) identified below.
Please find the Service Tag numbers we discussed below:

For any systems listed above that are not exhibiting symptoms please provide us with the following shipping data, to make the necessary arrangements to deliver the proposed solution.

At this time we have found several cases where users of this notebook have suffered from this issue, though we have not come across any cases where more catastrophic damage has occurred, such as a battery explosion, smoke or a fire. Even so, owners of Dell's XPS 9550 and Precision 5510 series notebooks should contact Dell immediately to ensure that their devices are safe to use.
