Surface Pro power cords recalled by Microsoft – could catch fire

The AC power chords for the Microsoft Surface Pro have been recalled by Microsoft due to it being a fire hazard. This applies to the Microsoft surface Pro, the model before the Surface Pro 4 and applies to units which were sold before March 2015 in the US and July 15th in the EU.

Microsoft warns that if the power chord is damaged or too tightly wound it may tear slightly, heat up and potentially catch fire, though Microsoft do state that they are being very cautious as this only applies to a “very small” number of units.

(Microsoft has already released a revised cable that does not suffer from this issue)

Microsoft will be offering a free replacement for the power cable on January 22nd, though they have yet to provide us with a link to use to claim this power chord or a delivery timeframe for the new power chords.
