The PS4 is set to surpass the PS3’s lifetime sales

In the final months of 2017, Sony managed to sell around 6.5 million PS4 consoles, selling a total of 76.5 million consoles between their PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro lineups. Sadly, Sony has not revealed exactly how many of each console has sold, though the console has nonetheless sold well during the quarter, despite the release of the Xbox One X.

In 2018 Sony expects the PS4 to outsell their last-generation PS3 console, which sold 83.8 million units in its lifetime, with games like God of War, Insomniac’s Spider-Man and the release of their Shadow of the Colossus remake being set to bring even more gamers to the platform.

These sales figures still pale in comparison to Sony’s PS2, which had lifetime sales of over 155 million units worldwide, making the PS4’s sales seem somewhat disappointing by comparison. Even so, Sony is the undisputed leader of this console generation, so much so that Microsoft doesn’t reveal the sales numbers for their consoles anymore.

Right now Sony also controls one of the strongest first party games lineups, with Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, Detriot: Become Human and several other exclusive titles on the horizon.
