The Ataribox will launch with a crowdfunding campaign

Atari has confirmed that their upcoming Ataribox console will be launched “within the framework of a crowdfunding campaign”, stating that this will limit the risk to the company.

This means that the new console will need to rely on crowdfunding for support, showing that Atari either does not have the funds to invest fully into this console on their own or that they are not confident enough in their new product to back the device by themselves.

At this time the exact pricing and hardware contained in the Ataribox are unknown, as is the exact functionality of the console, though it looks like this console will provide users with a lot more options than Nintendo’s Mini consoles. It looks like this new console is designed for internet connectivity, which looks like it will allow users to install new content from the internet and potentially play online games.

This new console will come in black with either red or wood styled detailing, with the console supporting Gigabit Ethernet and SD cards, with the console also sporting four USB ports and an HDMI output.

our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.
