The PS4 is set to surpass the PS3's lifetime sales

PS4 sales are still under half Sony's total PS2 sales

The PS4 is set to surpass the PS3's lifetime sales

In the final months of 2017, Sony managed to sell around 6.5 million PS4 consoles, selling a total of 76.5 million consoles between their PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro lineups. Sadly, Sony has not revealed exactly how many of each console has sold, though the console has nonetheless sold well during the quarter, despite the release of the Xbox One X.

In 2018 Sony expects the PS4 to outsell their last-generation PS3 console, which sold 83.8 million units in its lifetime, with games like God of War, Insomniac's Spider-Man and the release of their Shadow of the Colossus remake being set to bring even more gamers to the platform.

These sales figures still pale in comparison to Sony's PS2, which had lifetime sales of over 155 million units worldwide, making the PS4's sales seem somewhat disappointing by comparison. Even so, Sony is the undisputed leader of this console generation, so much so that Microsoft doesn't reveal the sales numbers for their consoles anymore.

Right now Sony also controls one of the strongest first party games lineups, with Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, Detriot: Become Human and several other exclusive titles on the horizon.

In the last quarter, Sony's PS4 division brought in over 718 billion yen (£4.6 billion) in profit, making the console highly profitable for the company.

Yeah but with the addition of the VR stuff, I think that gave the PS4 a tiny bit of a kick. It will be interesting to see what (if anything) MS does with VR on their consoles. It's a niche thing, but SkyrimVR appears to be quite the hit (no shock there).Quote

Hey, it's already surpassed WiiU sales LOL. Love my PS4, only problem is finding the time to use it. Still have Horizon, Last of Us Remastered, and RE7 to play. Shadow of the Colossus is on it's way, then God of War 4 in April.Quote

While the Switch has been hugely popular it is hard to beat the head start that the PS4 has had, though the Switch could catch up in time.

TBH I really want a Switch, but I need to get more time to play games to justify the cost.

Yeah, I love my PS4 too, though I also love my Wii U. Can't bet Nintendo for party games like Smash Bros, Mario Kart etc.Quote
