In a surprise move by Dell, it seems that they are finally listening to their end users requests to have the option of more machines without operating systems, along with a plan to reduce the amount of pre-installed software on its other systems.

According to this website, 85,000 users have already gone to the trouble of creating an account and voting for the "pre-installed Linux" option, and another 55,000 have asked for "pre-installed OpenOffice." Whilst Dell has agreed to the move, they haven't yet decided whether customers will receive the service as a free option, or whether the customer will still have to pay for the privilage .

In a separate statement, the company explained why it would not be offering pre-installed Linux: customers want too many variants.

"There is no single customer preference for a distribution of Linux," said Dell. "We don't want to pick one distribution and alienate users with a preference for another."

Regardless, Dell is in a spot of bother at the moment both financially and from a management perspective. Perhaps they could do well to listen a little harder.
