Intel X38 And X48 Chipsets Coming Soon

According to manufacturer sources, Intel will officially begin shipping the X38 chipset to motherboard manufacturers sometime in the middle of this month, allowing motherboards bearing the new chipset to be able to be released by the end of the month. This is in order to compete with AMD's RD790 chipset which is supposed to come out sometime in November.

The X38 chipset features 1333MHz FSB and DDR3-1333 support, PCI Express 2.0 (PCIe), dual PCIe x16 graphics slots, and will be the first core logic chipset to sport an Integrated Heatspreader (IHS).

Intel also has a possible ugrade chipset in the works, featuring the same general chip design as the X38 but with 1600MHz FSB and DDR3-1600 support, called the X48. Motherboard manufacturers would not need to adjust their X38 board design as the X48 chipset uses the same PCB. However, Intel will not decide whether to release the X48 chipset until they evaluate the consumer reception of the X38 chipset. If it is to be released, it would likely come by the end of this year so that motherboards could start shipping by the first quarter of 2008.
