Sapphire Comes Out With HD 6870 TOXIC and Vapor-X Editions Page: 1

Sapphire Technology has come out with two new editions of the popular Radeon HD 6870. Both cards are custom made for enthusiasts and are part of the highly acclaimed TOXIC and Vapor-X  series editions from the manufacturer.

The first of the two cards - the Sapphire HD 6970 TOXIC Edition is a factory overclocked version with 1120 stream processors and 56 texture processing units. The core clock has been ramped up to 970MHz while the memory clock has been set to 1150MHz. The bumped up clocks result in a significant boost in performance. The Sapphire HD 6870 Vapor-X Edition on the other hand is totally based on the reference GPU with core and memory clocks running at 900MHz and 1050MHz respectively.

Both cards boast of Sapphire’s exclusive Vapor-X cooler for terrific and efficient cooling. There is also some interesting and exclusive hardward loaded by Sapphire on to the cards. First among these is the on-board 10-phase power control and the highly efficient, cool running patented second generation Black Diamond chokes. Together, these features give enthusiasts and overclockers lots of headroom for playing around with their cards. When used with Sapphire’s own overclocking utility TriXX, the cards should be a pleasure for them to work on.

The HD 6870 TOXIC Edition has also bee equipped with two DVI, one HDMI, and two mini DisplayPort connectors. When clubbed together, the DVI/HDMI outputs and the two DisplayPorts allow the card to support up to four monitors in Eyefinity mode. Then there is the third generation Unified Video Decoder technology that supports Multi-view Video Coding for perfect decoding of Blu-Ray 3D and other file formats. Sapphire has also thrown in full support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in addition to upgrading HDMI to 1.4a.

Both cards have started shipping, with pricing details expected to be announced soon.
