Synology Upgrades DiskStation Manager Firmware to Version 2.3 Page: 1

Synology today released an updated version of its DiskStation Manager firmware in the form of version 2.3. Simply dubbed the Synology DSM 2.3, the firmware update brings many new features to the application.

The new version features simple volume management using the new Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), which delivers simplified RAID setup by optimizing disk capacities. This is particularly useful when the hard drives used are of different sizes. Synology has also built EZ-Internet Wizard into the firmware to allow users to easily connect to the DiskStation from the Internet. The wizard handles everything from firewall settings, to PPPoE setup and DDNS registration as well as router port forwarding.

Security has also been beefed up with AES 256-bit shared folder encryption. Other new features introduced in the Synology DSM 2.3 include a new iPhone app in the form of the Synology DS cam, which allows users who have Surveillance Station installed to check out their IP cameras live, take snapshots, and view recorded events via their iPhone or iPod touch. DS cam is already available as a free download via the Apple App Store.

The DiskStation manufacturer has also improved upon the versions of File Station 3, Surveillance Station 4, Photo Station 4, and Audio Station 2 with the new firmware. The upgrade is a complete one that boosts the overall capabilities of Synology’s DiskStation devices. While new DiskStations from the manufacturer will ship with the updated firmware, existing users can upgrade their devices by downloading the firmware for free from Synology Support.
