Introduction

The X570 set of motherboards we’ve previewed here at OC3D have really brought a lot of interest to the AMD platform.

We know that the Zen architecture and Ryzen CPUs really brought AMD back to the forefront of the market but we also know that history meant many people stayed away just because they couldn’t quite believe that AMD had absolutely solved all their problems. The release of the 2nd Generation of Ryzen CPUs and the X470 chipset dispelled all that doubt and solidified the AMD position as a genuine challenger for the top of the performance mountain, and certainly the most affordable way to bring serious core counts to your desktop.

AMD would be forgiven if they decided to rest upon their laurels, and indeed their hardys, having rescued the companies portfolio and brought their PC market share to the same kind of brand identity dominance that their inclusion in two of the three major players has to the console market. However, AMD have forged forwards with the upcoming release of the 3rd Generation Ryzen CPUs and Zen 2 architecture in the form of the X570 chipset and the processors that will launch on the 7th of July. The X570 isn’t an X470 with a BIOS change to support the new CPUs though. There are changes, if you’ll pardon the expression, across the board.

The last of the motherboards we’re bringing you a preview of is the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Xtreme. We’ve already been impressed by both the Master and Pro Gigabyte motherboards, but this Xtreme version shows how much attention to detail the Gigabyte design team have put into the newest AM4 platform. So much so we think they are finally banishing any lingering power issues that have been an unwanted feature of some of their recent offerings.

Whilst we concentrate very hard to not place an E at the beginning of the name of the motherboard let’s bring you the details of the X570 Aorus Xtreme, and we’ve got a few more choice bits of information to bring you now we’re into July and less than a week away from the full launch.

Technical Specifications

Normally at this point we’d rattle off the various features included on the X570 Aorus Xtreme, but we’re covering that on the next pages in both the slides we have an photos of the actual thing. So rather than tell you all the details twice, let’s go over the headlines for the impatient before we get to the nitty gritty.

The undoubted main event of the X570 chipset is the inclusion of the latest PCI Express 4.0 specification which has doubled the available bandwidth from 32 Gb/s on PCI Express 3.0 to 64 Gb/s on version 4.0. That gives you way more bandwidth for your GPU as well as plenty more headroom for your M.2 drive. With current hardware that might mean that both GPU and M.2 perform to their fullest at all times, but the key is that future hardware will be able to take ultimate advantage of this increased bandwidth to bring greater graphical fidelity or truly eye-popping transfer speeds to the party.

The second key component is the addition of Intel’s WiFi 6 802.11ax technology which, with the right hardware in your home network, offers twice the throughput of the current 802.11ac specification. Add in support for Bluetooth 5 and there is no doubt that our modern wireless world is catered for in an even stronger manner than it has been until now.

The last feature that we want to put in neon and highlight for you all is the commitment Gigabyte have placed upon bringing the best possible power delivery to their X570 Aorus Xtreme. With an 8 layer PCB covered in double thickness copper and a worlds first 16 phase power – without the use of doublers – the Aorus Xtreme definitely lives up to its name. Given that the top end Ryzen 3 CPU is a 32 thread, 16 core behemoth with 105W TDP the need for plentiful power delivery is paramount. Fortunately the Gigabyte has it in spades.

The amount of cooling potential on the Xtreme is in keeping with the quality we’ve seen from both the Aorus Master and Aorus Pro. As you would expect from a motherboard called the Xtreme, the Gigabyte has plenty of internal temperature monitoring points, two external ones, a cable to help keep your noise under control along with a 8 hybrid fan/pump connectors and a supplied fan commander that brings a further 8 hybrid fan/pump headers to your system if you so require it. It’s fair to say that airflow wont be a concern with the Aorus Xtreme.
