We always talk about the hilarious box-art and naming conventions of old – giant fantasy dragons on products called Thunderhammer or what have you – but we think that, in the current global climate, perhaps sticking to the Tomahawk cruise missile naming and imagery is a bit distasteful. At the very least MSI could lean in to some indigenous peoples iconography if they wanted to maintain a recognisable brand.
As regular readers will know we always cover the motherboard in extreme closeup to show off those details it’s harder to see on a broad overview photo, but equally it’s easy to lose sight of the woods for the trees, so a nice overview of what might be sitting in your case is good to have too. The Tomahawk belies it’s placement in the MSI range by looking very nice for the money. A little spartan, but that’s fine with us.
The VRM heatsink is a seriously chonky boi. At first we were confused as to why MSI had gone to quite so much effort in this department when we’d already seen how the Z790s hardly got warm, but with 75A Power Stages it doesn’t hurt to go overkill on the cooling. Anything that takes away a worry when really pushing your processor is a positive in our book.
Down the bottom you can see that MSI have given us a braced PCI Express 5.0 slot for your GPU, as well as three M.2 slots. All of them PCIe 4.0 we might add. The lanes for the top one come from the CPU whilst the B760 chipset itself handles the bottom two.
Like Victorians transitioning into adulthood we always take the grand tour of the motherboards here, and we go clockwise from the top left. The MAG Tomahawk has two 8 pin ATX power inputs for the CPU, to keep your 13th Intel Processor sated with smooth voltage.
The top right brings us the two CPU fan headers as well as two system fan headers, keeping everything neatly in the same place. There are four total RGB headers – two ARGB, two regular – that form the MSI Mystic Light ecosystem and the first two are also to be found at the top right hand corner.
