AMD Radeon Software Crimson 16.4.2 - DirectX 12 Performance Boosted

Testing Methodology

To test the performance of AMD's new Radeon Software Crimson 16.4.2 driver we will be testing a large number of DirectX 12 games that are currently available on the market. In these games, we will test the game with their own specific Radeon Software driver update and compare that performance to AMD's new 16.4.2 driver.

If the 16.4.2 driver gives us a performance boost when compared to each game's specific DirectX 12 optimized driver we can then conclusively prove that AMD has indeed improved their DirectX 12 driver support.

We will also be testing each of these games with Nvidia's GTX 980Ti with their latest 364.96 drivers in order to see if AMD's claims that they have the best performance in DirectX 12 hold true.

Test Setup

We will be testing this new driver on our dedicated Gaming test rig using the current flagship GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia. Both GPUs will be the reference design and will be running at stock settings.

AMD R9 Fury X & Nvidia GTX 980Ti
Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4.7GHz
ASUS Maximus VIII Hero
G.Skill Ripjaws 4x4GB DDR4 3200MHz
Corsair HX1200i
Corsair H110i GT
Windows 10 x64

Is this the driver that increases DX12 performance? I didn't find that info in the driver release notes?Quote

The main thing about this driver is the enhanced CF profiles for the Radeon Pro Duo, but it does offer more than what the release notes say.

AMD were nice enough to give us this driver early saying little more than that it contained new DirectX 12 optimizations, so we spent a lot of time testing it and low and behold we got a performance gain in every DirectX 12 game we tried.

While the performance gains are not massive, around 3-5% in most cases, they are very welcome. We expect that AMD are working on more optimizations for future releases, they want the best DX12 performance for when then next generation of products release.Quote

That's all nice but what about fixing X-Fire issues the latest titles are plagued with?
DX11 and it's limitations will remain with us for some time...Quote

Ah okay then. Small increases but as they get better with dx12 and games get better at using it, should work out for them in the long runQuote

I don't know if I missed the reason written somewhere but why was GOW only tested at 4k?Quote
