ASUS ROG Strix OC RTX 3080 12GB Review

Introduction

We don't think we'd be giving away any secrets, or telling you things of which you were previously unaware, to suggest that the launch of the Nvidia Ampere cards came in the middle of the perfect storm of unavailability. With crypto-mining at an all-time high, and COVID causing the world to go into lockdown, supply issues were horrific. It was hard to make the cards, hard to move them around the globe, and hard to find them even if they arrived. Anyone currently trying to find a Playstation 5 will understand.

Thankfully Nvidia have taken the opportunity as parts of the world return, somewhat, to normal to refresh the RTX 3080. It was hardly a slow card but perhaps these revisions will smooth the manufacturing process and thus let more people own them. What has changed then? Firstly the RTX 3080 12GB, as might be guessed, has the same GDDR6X memory on board as the RTX 3080 Ti, so instead of 320-bit 10GB we have 384-bit 12GB. Nvidia have also bumped the CUDA Core count up from 8704 to 8960. Still enough of a gap to not eat in to the sales of the RTX 3080 Ti, but equally enough of a boost to hopefully increase performance too. That is, naturally, what we're here to find out so let's discover if the new ASUS Strix OC RTX 3080 12GB is worthy of your attention.

Technical Specifications

The ASUS Strix is available in a regular style, or as regular as any Strix gets, and the model we have on test here today, the OC edition. Fortunately the OC edition was the model we had for both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti, so it's the perfect opportunity to compare how the 12GB revision with the 256 extra CUDA Cores boosts the performance of this latest RTX 3080.

It's funny seeing all those Nvidia cards at the top of the power draw charts with AMD at the bottom. Obviously their cards are behind in performance, but it's still interesting.Quote

ID take lower power draw these days. With the cost of electricity through the roof, it stings when I see my PSU showing 600W draw sometimes.Quote

Last chance cash grab IMO.

Mining is already starting to creak. Tons of AMD cards in stock on OCUK, not selling due to stupid prices. People are selling off 3x 3060ti in a FS forum I go to, and all of a sudden cards like the 2060 super and so on are appearing.

The first rats are deserting ship IMO. I give it 3 months and that bubble 'gon burst HARD. All of a sudden the market will be swamped with ex mining cards and Nvidia and AMD won't be able to sell a new one for love nor money.Quote
