3D Mark
In the most upto-date Futuremark offering the Gigabyte finds itself just behind the pack. By no means is it slow though. Think of it like the Manor Marussia in Formula One. All of them are so fast you struggle to comprehend it, this is just "less fast".

Why is it, that the 'Vanilla' / Reference 980TI's can end up number 2 and number 3 in the lists for the 4K test and the Watchdogs test?

Silicone lottery.Quote
TBH I did not know the difference by winning the lottery could outperform the gains from £100 extra spend on a 'top' card

Would be interesting to see ~20 identical cards being tested to fully understand how much of a difference it can make.Quote
Thanks.

Still a 980 Ti core in the middle, the top cards add longevity and better overclocking for poorer binned / silicone lottery GPU's. The higher end cards do have muych better components and cooling. Doesnt always mean its going to be the best overclocking card on the planet.Quote
