MSI Modern MD241P Productivity Monitor Review

Conclusion

Clearly the MSI Modern MD241P isn’t a monitor for those of you who want to game at ultra-high frame rates or resolutions. But then that’s the point, it isn’t trying to be. Those things require huge graphical horsepower to achieve. What’s the point in owning a 4K 240Hz panel if you’ve got a GTX 750 Ti in your rig?

What it is designed for are people who fall roughly in to two camps. Those of you who want a simple display for business or productivity tasks but also capable of some 1080P 60 FPS gaming – so nearly all games then, or those who already have a beast of a display and want an affordable second screen option that doesn’t compromise image quality or ergonomics.

The external design is nice and simple. Not in a “damning with faint praise” way, but rather it’s nice to see a design which does the basics perfectly and hasn’t got any extraneous details that cost extra but don’t remotely effect the quality of the image. In the same way that we always say that flashy case internals are a nice extra, but you spend your life looking at the monitor, so here you look at the front of your display and not the back so having a minimalist back isn’t remotely a negative.

The stand is excellent. There is plenty of adjustability built into it and it’s of a good quality too, especially considering the £160 MSRP of the MD241P. Anyone who has investigated Ergotron stands knows how expensive a 3rd party one can be. It adjusts in all the ways we need, including portrait, so regardless of your setup there is no excuse for not having it in the most comfortable position.

All of which would matter for little if the panel itself wasn’t of a good quality. With 1920×1080 resolution at 75 Hz the IPS panel in the MD241P is enough for the vast majority of users, and perfect if you want the extra flexibility that comes from the HDMI input. It’s an excellent choice if you want a console solution that isn’t the main television in your house. The majority of technologies in the MSI are aimed at reducing eye-strain, with anti-flicker alongside blue light reduction. Elements that you don’t fully appreciate until you have a display which is poor in these areas.

With an MSRP around the £160 mark this is a perfect monitor for those who want a lot of flexibility and a great option if you’re wondering what a second screen could bring to your productivity without breaking the bank to find out. A quality stand and a rock solid image with good colour balance and contrast makes the MSI Modern MD241P an excellent value for money addition to your armoury.
