It says much about how the MSI R9 390X Gaming performs that it's ahead of the MSI R9 290X Lightning - a card which was the zenith of the Hawaii XT range. In the 4K Fire Strike test the 390X also fit neatly into the price/performance assumption box, namely ahead of the GTX970 but slightly behind a GTX980.
