Peak clock speed has always been a slightly less linear thing than you might imagine. Much like the CPU world where you can have a CPU with 4 cores that runs faster than a 12 core model, so the more architecture there is on a graphics card doesn’t always mean you can keep pushing the clock speed ever higher. However, it’s clear with the latest 4000 series cards that the clock speed has taken a massive leap forwards.
